Created by Jean-Baptiste Bosteels in 1791 β 39 years before the Kingdom of Belgium existed β the family brewery has inspired seven generations of Bosteels to master the demanding art of Belgian brewing.
In 1993, Antoine Bosteels began refining a three-grain tripel inspired by a local bakery's multi-grained bread. When he discovered a 1679 recipe from the Carmelite (Karmelieten) abbey in Dendermonde nearly identical to his own, the beer found its name.
Launched in 1996, Tripel Karmeliet was an instant success β earning the World Beer Cup Gold Medal in 1998 and its place among the world's great beers.
